How to make a DIY door wreath at home
We love christmas and we love door wreaths and table decorations at Christmas time. They are so fun to make with friends and family or on your own.
Not only are they fun to make, a fresh wreath hanging on your door is the signal of the beginning of the festive season, freshly clipped evergreens, pinecones and berries and if you are going all out, cinnamon sticks and dried oranges.
A greenery wreath is far simpler than you can imagine, you just need a bit of creativity and imagination and of course some of our tips to make a basic wreath a masterpiece to display on your front door.
Here are some of our top tips and what we recommend for this DIY project
What you will need;
- Wire Wreath Frame or Wicker Frame (any size 12” plus)
- Wire Cutters
- Pruning Cutters
- Paddle Wire
- Greenery and Foliage (Fern, Conifer, Rosemary, Eucalyptus, Fir, Pine, Cedar, Juniper, Laurel, Bay, Sage, Rose Hips, Holly, Hawthorn, Twig Dogwood, Moss)
- Berries and Pineones
- Dried Oranges & Cinammon (optional)
- Ribbon (optional)
- Fairy Lights (optional)
- Gardening Gloves
Before you start, make sure you have all your items laid out and of course you have either been to the local woods to get your materials (greenery and foliage etc) or been to the local florist shop to get supplies.
Dried Oranges and cinammon can be purchased in most crafty shops during this time of year.
Try purchasing Cinammon sticks from; The Range, Amazon, Baker Ross
Try purchasing Dried Oranges from; Amazon, The Range, Wilko or of course they can be made at home, there are lots of tutorial videos on how to do this.
Lets start!
First, cut all of your materials into segments. If you would prefer your wreath to be symmetrical ensure you clip each branch/stem into 4-6” segments. If you would like your wreath a little more wilder/wider cut these longer, between 4-8” segments. Keep your pieces in sorted piles, this will help you stay organised whilst assembling.
Now, to make a start on your wreath. Wrap your paddle wire around the wreath frame, several times to secure it. Keep the wire attached to the paddle and set it to the side.
Next, you are ready to start adding your greenery and foliage. Pick up a branch/stem of each of your items and start making a small bouquet in your hands. Lay this onto your frame and wrap the wire around this bunch five times. Ensuring this is secure. Each time you wrap, pull this tight to ensure this is secure. This is what will hold your wreath segments together.
Continue doing this around your frame until this is complete, ensuring you overlap each bouquet that you laid, leaving no gaps.
Remember, as the greenery and foliage starts to lose its freshness, these items will shrink and shrivel slightly so be sure to keep this all as tight as you can get it.
Once you have completed the frame, hold it up and check that it looks even and complete, if there are missing bits, simply make a few extra bouquets and add these in with the wire as before.
The final step is to tie it off. To do this, wrap your wire an additional three times. Clip the wire with the cutters.
Turn your wreath over and thread the end of the wire to the back of the wreath ensuring this is tight and cannot be seen from the front. You also want to ensure this is not sticking out so that it cannot scratch your door.
If you are adding in berries and other items such as the orange segments, cinammon, pine cones, berries, you will need to secure these with the wire, you can carefully wrap each piece with the wire and insert this and wrap carefully onto the frame.
Adding any final touches? Ribbon? Lights? Simply wire these or thread them around, however you can secure these.
Sit back and admire your masterpiece and get that displayed as quickly as possible on your door!
Your fresh wreath will last for some time after the seasons festivities!
Have a great time and good luck!
